PANAJI: Students in the state will soon be able to grow food in their school campus owing to an initiative taken up by the state department of Agriculture. This initiative will be taken up full-swing in the new academic year. Currently, the department is in the process of approaching schools with spacious campuses that can accommodate the move.

“We have identified about 25 schools in the state that can take up this initiative. These include schools that fall under the Goa board as well ICSE and CBSE schools. This initiative is an attempt to inculcate the interest of growing one’s own food among children,” said director, Agriculture

Names of the identified schools will be shared with the taluka level officers by at the start of the new academic year 2017-18. Following this, the officers will distribute farming kits among students and teachers and train them in the art of urban gardening.
The kit which will be distributed free of cost to the schools, will contain gardening equipment, organic manure, vegetable seeds, bio-pesticides, etc.
The cost of each kit is about Rs 5,000 which agriculture will be distributing among these schools free of cost.
“Since educational institutions in the state do not have agriculture as a part of their syllabus, this initiative will be an extra-curricular activity in the agenda of the identified schools. We are hopeful that this move evokes interest among young ones to look at agriculture as a fun-activity.” added Kakode.
